The Challenge

Many drugs that target diseases of the brain do not have the desired degree of brain penetration due to a range of factors (restrictive binding, ionisation, poor passive permeability, size, efflux etc). Even when sufficient drug levels are achieved in the brain, the dose required to deliver efficacy may be limited by systemic side-effects. Therefore greater brain penetration concomitant with a lower dose and systemic exposure is desirable for some drugs that have undesired systemic effects or very low brain penetration capability

Cerense

Cerense® is a product development platform, offered in collaboration with Genzyme Pharmaceuticals. It aims to substantially improve the development success of CNS medicines that normally exhibit poor permeation of the BBB.

Proprietary formulation technology opens the BBB and delivers unmodified drug compounds into the brain. It can thus unlock the potential of compounds constrained by poor BBB penetration (such as peptides, proteins, antibodies and siRNA), as well as open new avenues for CNS medicines research.

The CERENSE® product development platform can be reviewed at your company under confidentiality and a customised program of studies tailored to your specific drug therapy needs. Drug compounds are assessed under a product collaboration agreement that is exclusive for the duration of your study.
